The artist's works and style
An artist who was active in Paris during the 20th century, Henri Lebasque is a French post-impressionist painter. His paintings are mostly landscape scenes, representing reality fairly faithfully, but using a pointillist technique and pastel shades.
The life of Henri Lebasque
Henri Lebasque (1865-1937) was a French post-impressionist painter born in Maine et Loire.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers, then moved to the Académie Colarossi. For six years, he painted the frescoes at the Pantheon with Ferdinand Humbert. His paintings are exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, where he meets Camille Pissaro - hence the latter's influence on Pointillist techniques.
Later, he participated in the founding of the Salon d'Automne, then in ceramic trials for André Metthey.
He was appointed painter to the French army in 1917, at the same time as Félix Vallotton. He produced a number of war paintings during the First World War.
He then held a number of exhibitions in several Parisian galleries.
He died in Le Cannet in 1937.
Henri Lebasque's imprint on his period
Henri Lebasque did not make a lasting impression on the national scene, and was not very well known during his lifetime, compared with Pissarro, who worked with him, for example. However, some collectors appreciated his work, and the majority of his canvases are in private hands.
