Artist's style and technique

A painter of landscapes and still lifes, Gaston Balande mainly depicts rural areas and seascapes. His canvases are close to naturalism, a movement aiming to represent nature as it is, without any particular pictorial process.

The life of Gaston Balande

Gaston Balande (1880 - 1971) developed a passion for art from an early age, particularly drawing. He had no academic training, but managed to make a name for himself by practicing on his own, as a self-taught artist, and devoted himself to depicting rural and urban landscapes, while working at various jobs to support himself. After failing his first entrance exam to the Arts Décoratifs, he managed to get in, but his training was put on hold during his military service.

Moving back to Paris after the war, he studied in the studios of Ruppert Bunny and Jean-Paul Laurens. His work came to the attention of Fernand Cormon, who offered him a place in his studio.

In 1914, he joined a hospital as a volunteer, treating many of the wounded. On several occasions, he depicted scenes of wounded soldiers and produced a number of war paintings. Thanks to a grant, he travels around Europe with his wife, acquiring new techniques. He exhibited in the United States alongside Vlaminck, Picasso, Braque and many others.

He died in Paris in 1971.
