Charles Atamian, his life and work

Charles Atamian was born in Constantinople in 1872.

Born into a family of artists, he studied between the Ottoman Empire and Italy. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, and returned to Turkey, where he obtained a position as chief ceramist.

He began exhibiting at the Salon d'Automne in 1903, and also worked as an illustrator. His interest in portraiture did not begin until the early 1910s.

Initially attracted by the landscapes of Provence, he particularly appreciated those of Saint-Gilles Croix de Vie, where he made regular visits in the 20s.

He takes part in the Salon de France, organized by the Poincaré government to auction off works of art to help the French economy. At the same time, he became a French citizen.

Under the Occupation, he was forced into exile in the Indre region, where he painted the last works of his career.

He died in Paris in 1947, aged 74.
