Artist's style and technique

André Cottavoz is an artist associated with the École de Paris, and also questions the materiality of the work of art as well as its function. He is close to notions such as land art, which aims to produce works of art using elements found in nature. He produces drawings, prints, paintings and sculptures.

The life of André Cottavoz

Born in Saint-Marcellin, Isère, André Cottavoz(1922 - 2012) is a French painter and sculptor.

He trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Lyon. He was deported to Austria in 1942 as part of the Obligatory Labor Service, and continued to paint during this period, although all his paintings were destroyed.

After the war, he was awarded the Prix Fénéon and exhibited his work several times. The Lyon school was evolving rapidly, and saw the birth of New Objectivity, or Sanzism, which advocated a liberation and emancipation of currents. Stylistically, he became close to Jean Fusaro.

Together, they reflected on the representation of light in their canvases and on the textures to be used to create relief. André Cottavoz comes to the conclusion that he "sculpts" his canvases, demonstrating genuine research into the geometric and colorimetric composition of his canvases.

In 1962, he moved to Vallauris and produced a number of ceramics with Roger Collet. He died there in 2012, aged 89.

The artist's imprint on his era

Through his work, André Cottavoz questions the function and role of the work of art, and above all its purpose. He doesn't just produce; he conceptualizes. This is one of the reasons why his works were so popular during his lifetime. Since his death in 2012, his works have gone from strength to strength. They are highly prized by contemporary art lovers.
