Style and technique of artist Charles Auffret

Charles Auffret masters the traditional techniques of sculpture: bronze and plaster, to produce a large number of sculptures in the stylistic vein of Alfred Janniot - thus working on the representation of the female body, which constitute the major part of his work. He also produces preparatory drawings for his work in volume.

Charles Auffret, his life and work

Charles Auffret (1929-2001) was a French engraver and sculptor born in Paris.

A native of Besançon, he began his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, under the guidance of sculptor Pierre Honoré. He was particularly inspired by the works of François Pompon, Rude and Sluter. Accepted at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, Alfred Janniot took him under his wing and taught him the techniques of monumental sculpture.

He was later influenced by Wlérick and Delfiau.

From 1956, he moved into his own studio, next to Brancusi's. He then chose the Buttes Chaumont district to work in, where he remained for the rest of his life, rubbing shoulders with the sculptors of the Groupe des Neuf, which included Jean Carton and Jean Osouf.

At the same time, he teaches at the Beaux-Arts de Reims and the Ecole Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

Charles Auffret's imprint on his period

Some of Charles Auffret's work can be seen in various cities in Europe and France: a retrospective of his work was held at the Villa Medici in Rome in 2007, but relatively little of it is in private collections. His legacy is one of twentieth-century art and sculpture.
