Artist Pham Hau's style and technique

Pham Hau is a Vietnamese master lacquerer who works with traditional Vietnamese lacquer techniques. He uses a variety of supports: screens, boxes, furniture and panels. He adds Western painting techniques to his compositions.

The life of Pham Hau

Pham Hau was born in 1903 in a village in Vietnam.

Through his marriage, he met the painter Nam Son Nguyen, and enrolled at the École des Beaux-Arts d'Indochine. Joseph Inguimberty trained him in lacquer techniques, with which they mixed pine resin. This technique creates a new material after the application of successive layers, all sanded down to reveal new reflections.

He often depicts landscapes, but also animals and plant motifs. His work is based on oriental Vietnamese iconography, which he develops and modernizes.

His work has been exhibited twice in Vietnam and once in Toronto. Nevertheless, his panels and screens in Vietnamese lacquer bear witness to a unique savoir-faire and are highly prized on the auction market.

The artist died in his hometown in 1995, aged 92.
