The artist's works and style
His refined mirrors, covered with green felt on the back, demonstrate exceptional technical mastery, with enamels inlaid with colored crystals and crackled gold effects. To achieve these effects, up to nine steps and usually four firings were required.
Mithé Espelt's work includes over five hundred ceramic models. Her world is sometimes inspired by tropical gardens, sometimes by solar stars, with vivid, colorful nuances.
His mirrors are particularly prized works that are highly representative of the evolution of his work and career.
Mithé Espelt: bringing ceramics back to life
Born in Lunel in 1923, Mithé Espelt is deeply attached to her native region. From an early age, the artist developed her talent by learning sculpture and drawing. Trained first at the Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, the young artist then joined the Fontcarrade art training school, specializing in ceramics.
After working in Paris, Mithé Espelt decided to move back to Lunel to open a ceramics workshop. Supported by her husband, her creations specializing in women's accessories met with great success. The designer produces mirrors, jewelry boxes, necklaces, buttons and useful objects such as key-rings and thermometers.
These objects, described by Antoine Candau as "the discreet luxury of everyday life", reveal the joyful soul of the ceramist.
Until 2000, Mithé Espelt produced numerous creations. Her daughter, Marion de Crécy, continues the tradition of high-quality artistic ceramics in the family workshop.
Mithé Espelt's imprint on his period
Mithé Espelt has left a significant mark on twentieth-century art history, and his original ceramic objects are highly prized, as are those of Line Vautrin and Pierre-Adrien Dalpayrat. Espelt's works continue to enjoy great success at auction.
His signature
Reflecting a desire to make his creations accessible to all, Mithé Espelt preferred not to sign his works. As a result, his mirrors were often wrongly attributed to François Lembo, even though their styles differed. This is why expertise is essential.
