Gilbert Poillerat, iconic 20th-century wrought-iron craftsman

Gilbert Poillerat (1902-1988) is an emblematic artist of 20th-century ironwork.

He graduated from the École Boulle in 1921, and trained as an ironworker with Edgar Brandt for eight years. During his apprenticeship, he also tried his hand at painting and chasing. Following his success as a master wrought-iron worker, he abandoned these disciplines to devote himself fully to ironwork.

He produced a large number of pieces of furniture, many of them rather massive tables, despite the finesse of their ornamentation. Poillerat makes abundant use of gold, which complements and brightens the dark shades often present in his furniture.

Among other works, he created the Grand Master's collar of the Ordre de la Libération, which was presented to General de Gaulle by the French government.

Gilbert Poillerat died in Paris in 1988, aged 85.
