Jean Carton's style and technique

Jean Carton masters the traditional techniques of sculpture: bronze and plaster, to produce a large number of sculptures in the stylistic vein of Aristide Maillol - thus working on the representation of the female body, which make up the majority of his work. He also produces preparatory drawings for his work in volume.

Jean Carton, his life and work

Jean Maurice Carton (1911-1988) was a French engraver and sculptor born in Paris.

Wishing to begin his career as a cabinetmaker, he attended the Duperré School of Applied Arts. Robert Wlérick quickly recognized his talent and encouraged him to become a sculptor.

He entered the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1928, and soon afterwards exhibited his work at the Salon de Mai and the Salon des Tuileries.

Like Hubert Yencesse, he receives the Blumenthal Prize for his work and organizes a solo exhibition at Galerie Bernier, where Dunoyer de Segonzac buys works from him.

He also won an Algerian prize, which enabled him to spend three years at the Villa d'Alger, a fashionable artistic residence in the 20th century.

Jean Carton was then elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts, which definitively established his legitimacy. He also became a member of the Société des peintres-graveurs français.

Jean Carton's imprint on his period

Some of Jean Carton's works can be seen in various cities in Europe and France, including one in the gardens of the Élysée Palace, but relatively few: most of his work is in private collections. His legacy is one of twentieth-century art and sculpture.
