Artist's style and technique

In the early 20th century, Archibald Knox was considered one of the masters of Art Nouveau. His talent was apparent in many areas of the graphic arts, but above all in furnishings. He was very close to the Art & Crafts movement, developed in architecture at the end of the 19th century, which was stylistically close to Art Nouveau.

The life of Archibald Knox

Born on the Isle of Man (central British Isles) in 1864 to Scottish parents, he studied at the Douglas School of Art and worked for the architect Baillie Scott. He then moved to London and became a designer for the Silver Studio. He then collaborated with Christopher Dresser, a very fashionable Victorian architect.

He then collaborated with Liberty & Co, for whom he created various furniture items: candleholders, combs, lighting fixtures, dishes, jewelry...

Alongside his career as an artist, he is also curator of the social history department at Manx National Heritage.

He draws much of his inspiration for his drawings and other creations from his native island.

Archibald Knox died in 1933, aged 68, on the Isle of Man.
