Style and technique of the artist Paul Désiré Trouillebert

Trouillebert was part of the Orientalist movement. He most often depicted nature. The majority of his work remains genre painting, but he also masters the representation of the body: he also paints nudes.

Paul Trouillebert and Barbizon

French artist Paul Désiré Trouillebert (1829-1900) has become a little-known but rare and sought-after figure in the art world. Born in Paris, he traveled throughout France and Europe in search of other sources of inspiration.

As part of the Orientalist movement, he mainly depicts a variety of landscapes inspired by the Orient. These may be flowers, mountains or the sea. He drew much of his inspiration from the painter Corot, one of his models.

Like many artists, he trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was a member of the Barbizon group. At the time, his work was still little recognized, as history painting was still predominant. Ernest Hébert was one of his masters. He remained little-known during his career, but his works were nevertheless in demand on the art market.

The value of his works

In the eyes of art experts and collectors, Paul Trouillebert is remarkable for his artistic simplicity. He draws most of his inspiration from the landscapes around him and from reality in general. The majority of his works are held in private collections, which is why they are present on the auction market.

Recognizing Paul Trouillebert's signature

Paul Trouillebert's paintings are usually signed and dated in the lower right or left-hand corner. However, as his work is not very well mastered, it is important to consult an expert.
