Henry Moret is a French painter and draughtsman, renowned in the Second Empire and Third Republic. His most prized works are his oils on canvas, and the price at which they sell on the market ranges from €100 to €300,000, a substantial range but one that speaks volumes about the value that can be attributed to works by Henry Moret. In 2019, an oil on canvas entitled Groix, (marine painting) sold for €300,000, whereas it was estimated at between €220,000 and €280,000.

Henry Moret was a 19th-century Impressionist and Synthetic painter who produced mainly marine paintings. He oscillated between two currents, and joined the Pont-Aven school with other more famous painters such as Gauguin. Moret mainly produced oils on canvas and drawings.

Henry Moret, forgotten seascape painter

Henry Moret (1856 - 1913) was a 19th-century painter of seascapes.

It was during his military service that he discovered the landscapes of southern Brittany and began learning painting techniques in a Lorient studio. Arriving in Paris after his military service, he entered the École des Beaux-Arts, where he studied in Jean-Léon Gérôme's studio. He then attended the Académie Julian. He exhibited his work at the Salon des artistes français and the Salon des Indépendants. He moved to Finistère, where he met Paul Gauguin and the Pont-Aven group of painters. The Duran-Ruel gallery held an exhibition of his work in Paris in 1898.

Most of his work will focus on depictions of the sea, throughout Brittany, but also on the coasts of the English Channel and the Netherlands.

He died of tuberculosis in Paris in 1913, aged 56.
