The artist's works and style

Émile Claus is one of the leading figures of luminism, a general term used to describe various painters, notably Spanish and Flemish. Pointillist, impressionist and realist tendencies are all present. He works mainly in drawing and oil on canvas, but has also produced a number of prints.

The life of Émile Claus

Émile Claus was born in Flanders, in Vive-Saint-Éloi, into a family of shopkeepers.

He decided early on to become a painter, and began his training at the Antwerp School of Fine Arts, exhibiting his first canvases in 1875. Early on, he worked on colorimetry.

He met the painter Théo Verstraerte, and the two artists influenced each other's work. His work is described as luminist from these pivotal years, when he worked not only with color, but also with light.

Later in his career, he became involved with the Laethem group and worked with the artists who were part of it.

He was also influenced by the Symbolist painter Henri Le Sidaner, with whom he also worked.

Émile Claus died in Astane in 1924.
