Alexandre Marie Guillemin, his life and work

Alexandre Marie Guillemin was a 19th-century painter born in 1817.

During his training, he frequented the studio of Baron Gros, who trained him in the technical aspects of drawing and color. Guillemin painted all over France, particularly in Brittany, where he depicted peasants. He was thus one of the "intimate painters" who abandoned historical painting in favor of depictions of everyday life and nature: this was the beginning of the Romantic sensibility in painting.

Emotions are highly developed, and the compositions rather sober.

Guillemin's main technique was oil on canvas, and he exhibited his work at the Salon alongside many other artists of his time, particularly the Romantics.

He died in 1880.

The artist's works and style

Guillemin's style lies somewhere between naturalism and romanticism, and his canvases are imbued with great simplicity but also great sensitivity.

He mainly painted oil on canvas, his most popular category at auction.
