Style and technique of artist Paul Jobert
Paul Jobert was a marine painter (depicting the sea, ships, sailors...). He painted a few portraits, following the academic canons of his time. He mainly produced oil paintings, most of which were marine pictures, in the image ofEugène Isabey or Parkes Bonnington.
Paul Jobert, his life and work
Paul Jobert (1863-1942) was a 19th-century French painter. He was born in Tlemcen, Algeria, into a family descended from Versailles diplomats working with the Ottoman Empire. His family was involved in the conquest of Algeria.
In the 1880s, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Algiers. Jules Bastien Lepage convinced him to continue his training in Paris. He became a pupil of Jules Lefevre and Benjamin Constant. He soon specialized in marine painting, an inspiration he drew from his childhood in Algiers. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, then at the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900. He also exhibited in New York and Philadelphia.
In 1891, he was appointed official painter to the French Navy, producing military scenes, mainly naval battles. He founded the Société des Peintres de Marine, now known as Action Maritime. He married an American, which opened up artistic opportunities for him on the other side of the Atlantic, where he made his work as well known as in France.
He ended his career still painting, as curator of the Constantine museum.
Paul Jobert's imprint on his era
Paul Jobert was instrumental in introducing marine painting to the United States. Although the genre had a strong presence in Europe, with painters such as Isabey, Bonington and John Constable, Americans produced few paintings of this type, and Jobert's were very successful in America.
Today, his works are still successful at auction. Although some of his works are held in museums in the USA and Europe, private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Paul Jobert sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that sometimes contrasts with the background. However, there are a few copies, so expertise is essential.
