Alfred Roll's style and technique
Alfred Roll was part of the realism movement, breaking with the academic canons of the time. His early career was marked by a realist influence. He produced mainly drawings and oils on canvas, but also made prints.
Alfred Roll, forgotten realist
Alfred Philippe Roll (1846-1919) was a French painter who left his mark on his era.
He was born in Paris into a modest family. No details of his childhood are known. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with Léon Bonnat, Harpignies and Daubigny. He began by painting landscapes.
During the French-Prussian war, he fought at the front as a militia lieutenant.
In 1875, he painted Inondation à Toulouse and began to capture the public's attention. This early-career painting is influenced by Romanticism, with hints of Courbet. He exhibited at the Paris Salon and won a gold medal for Silène. This painting is more naturalistic than his previous ones. In the same years, he turns to the portrait genre.
Roll was a committed artist, committed to painting the underprivileged, as Eugène Isabey had done with sailors. Thanks to his painting La Grève des mineurs, he became the official painter of the Third Republic. As a result, he received many state commissions, notably from Félix Faure, who appreciated his work.
In 1905, he was elected president of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts.
Alfred Roll's imprint on his era
Alfred Roll marked his era with his talent and non-conformism early in his career. His rejection of the academic canon paid off during the Third Republic.
Today, his works are appreciated by collectors who play a major role in preserving his work, even if some paintings are exhibited in museums.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Alfred Roll sometimes signs his works, usually at the bottom of the painting, in a color that contrasts with the background. However, there are many copies, so expertise is essential.
