Albert Maignan's style and technique

Maignan was part of the neoclassical movement, which advocated a return to Antiquity. He worked in the painter's classic media: drawing, print and oil on canvas, as well as panel. He produced an average number of works, which are rarely presented at auction.

The life of Albert Maignan

Albert Pierre René Maignan (1845-1906) was a French painter and artist of the 19th century, well known in his own time and a master of many painters.

He was born in Beaumont-sur-Sarthe into a relatively well-off family. His father left the notary's profession after Maignan's secondary education to move to Paris with his family. While still living in Le Mans, he showed a particular talent and interest in drawing. He then studied law in Paris. He trained as a painter in Jules Noël's studio and met Eugène Isabey, the great marine painter, who was to become his friend. In 1867, he exhibited two works at the Salon des Artistes Français, marking the beginning of his success. Between 1968 and 1969, he toured Europe to paint new places, then joined the studio of the painter Luminais. In 1892, his career really took off with La mort de Carpeaux, for which he won a gold medal.

During his career, he produced decorative paintings, notably for the Palais du Luxembourg in Paris, but also for the chapel built in memory of the victims of the Bazar de la Charité. He also decorated Le Train bleu.

He died in 1908 in the Val d'Oise, leaving part of his work to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Amiens.

Albert Maignan's legacy

Albert Maignan leaves behind an artistic legacy marked by his mastery of the neoclassical movement. His works continue to be admired for their precision and emotional power, and he is considered one of the most important artists of 19th-century France in terms of technical contribution. He died leaving behind a considerable artistic legacy.

Private collectors play a major role in the preservation of his work, given the scope of his production, even if some of his works are exhibited in museums.

Recognizing Maignan's signature

Artists do not always sign their works. If you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised. The signature may differ depending on the type of work: print, drawing or painting. There are also copies, which is why an appraisal is important.
