The life of Eugène Louis Gillot

Eugène Louis Gillot (1867-1925) was a French painter born in Paris.

He produced painters and watercolors, but started out as a wood engraver. Baron Dart adopted him, and he lived with him in his château. When Baron Dart died, Baroness Dart found him a studio in Paris and put him up.

Few details of his life are known, but we do know that he traveled and resided at the English court. He became friends with the royal couple and painted the shores of England, inspired by Turner.

He served in the Navy during the First World War, then left on an official Army mission in 1918. On his return to France, he founded the Salon des peintres de Marine and the Société nationale des Beaux-arts de la mer.
