Artist Martin Johnson Heade's style and technique

Heade was part of the Hudson River School movement, which brought together American landscape painters of Romantic inspiration. Later, he was classified as a member of American Luminism, a derivative of the former, which emphasized the use of light. He depicts nature extensively in his oil paintings, which are his most valuable works at auction.

The life of Martin Johnson Heade

Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) was an American painter relatively unknown to the general public in France. He was born in Lumberville, Pennsylvania, where he studied with Edward Hicks, an American primitive painter. He traveled to Europe in search of new inspiration and produced a number of marine paintings. He continued to produce them in America, exhibiting in Philadelphia and New York. It was during this period that he joined the Hudson River School.

Later in his career, he discovered a strong interest in South America. In particular, the landscapes of the Amazon were to inspire him greatly, and he would paint the plants and exotic animals found there, focusing his work on the representation of light.

At the end of his career, he married and moved to Florida, where he mainly painted still lifes of flowers.

Martin Johson Heade has never been a household name in France, but he is in the USA. His technique is remarkable. Today, some of his works are in museums, but private collectors play a major role in preserving his work.
