Artist's style and technique

Jules Émile Saintin was a nineteenth-century realist painter who placed his various characters in a bright, lively atmosphere. His portraits and genre scenes focus on women, mysterious creatures he tries to capture in all their splendor and authenticity.

The life of Jules Émile Saintin

Jules Émile Saintin (1829 - 1894) showed his talent for painting from an early age, starting to produce works at the age of 11. Coming from a modest family, he brought additional income into the household by starting to work. At the age of 16, he brilliantly passed the entrance exam to the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he was taught by Michel Martin Drolling and François Edouard Picot. Under the guidance of his teachers, he revealed his qualities and skills as a portrait painter. He soon won numerous medals at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1848, and was spotted by the Parisian intelligentsia. Despite his success, however, he was forced into exile in the United States, as his income was insufficient to support himself. He left France for the United States, retouching portraits for a photographer in New York. Nevertheless, during his American sojourn, he sent works to the Salon that enabled him to return to France. During his six years in the U.S., he gained considerable renown, presenting his work at the New York Academy in 1857 and becoming a member the following year. He produced a large number of portraits. Very attached to his native country, he remained nostalgic for the emulation of Paris and returned to the French capital for good in 1860. He frequented illustrious artists such as Boulanger and Paul Baudry, whom he brought together in his studio.

Jules Émile Saintin's influence on his era

His career finally took off in France, when he exhibited a work entitled "A White Woman Abducted by the Sioux" at the Salon, and became a paragon of genre painting, following the advice of his colleague Paul Baudry, while consolidating his reputation as a portraitist. In 1877, he was awarded the prestigious Légion d'Honneur medal.
