The life of Charles Angrand

Charles Théophile Angrand (1854 - 1926) was a 19th-century French painter.

Born in Rouen, Charles Angrand was a painter of the school of the same name. He first studied at the École normale d'instituteurs in Rouen, then became a secondary school teacher. As a young man, he visited the Camille Corot exhibition at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and decided to become a painter. He studied with Gustave Morin, and continued his career in Paris, being appointed as a tutor at the Lycée Chaptal. There he met Georges Seurat, who became both a friend and an influence. He played a major role in founding the Société des artistes indépendants, which organized the Salon des Indépendants. He also got to know Maximilien Luce, Van GoghPaul Signac, and other artists with whom he made friends and who were to influence his work. Some art historians believe that Charles Angrand had a clear influence on Van Gogh's production.

At the same time, he became involved in a libertarian magazine with Luce.

Angrand used a number of techniques during his lifetime, studying the Conté pencil technique in particular, and at the end of his life became interested solely in pastels.

Charles Angrand's imprint on his period

Charles Angrand has made a name for himself in the art world of the 19th century, devoting most of his work to exploring techniques. He is not very well known in Europe today, but his works are currently enjoying great success on the auction market. He remains one of the most important members of the Rouen School to this day.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all Angrand's works are signed. They may be at the bottom of the painting, usually with the inscription "CH. ANGRAND", but if you think you own one, it's best to have it appraised to be sure of its originality.
