Style and technique of artist Alfred Stevens

Alfred Stevens is a painter who belongs to both the realist and impressionist movements, drawing much of his inspiration from Delacroix and Ingres. He is one of the most eminent realist painters of the 19th century. He produced drawings, oils on canvas and a few prints.

The life of Alfred Stevens

Alfred Émile Léopold Stevens (1823 - 1906) was a 19th-century Belgian painter.

His father was a collector of paintings, particularly works by Delacroix and Géricault. His brother was an animal painter, and he had a second brother who was an art dealer, as well as a son who was a painter.

He began his training in the studio of painter François-Joseph Navez, and moved to Paris on the advice of Roqueplan. Here he met Baudelaire, Aurélien Scholl and Degas, three artists who were to be part of his circle of friends for the rest of his life. He studied in Ingres' studio at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. There, he copied masterpieces from the Louvre, but also produced works of his own, which he presented for the first time at the 1855 Universal Exhibition. His rise to fame was meteoric, and in the same year he exhibited at the Antwerp Salon and was decorated by the King of Belgium for his painting Chez Soi.

His artistic inspiration was nourished by the people he met, and he rubbed shoulders with many painters and sculptors, as well as writers. Eugène Delacroix and Alexandre Dumas were the witnesses at his wedding. It was through them that he acquired an important sensitivity. He not only enjoyed a successful career, but also ensured that his friends did too: for example, he offered Degas a contract to exhibit his paintings in Belgium, and became an important figure in the art market of the time.

A forerunner for his time, he opened a painting studio for women, which Sarah Bernhardt frequented.

Caught by health problems at the end of his career, he questioned his work, but continued to deliver large commissions while experimenting with Impressionism.

He died in Paris in 1906, some time after he had stopped painting.

Alfred Stevens' imprint on his period

Alfred Stevens made a name for himself in the 19th-century art world, devoting his life to painting and helping his friends in their careers. He made a contribution to art history not only through his works, but also through his dedication to exhibiting the work of other artists. He is the first living artist to have had a solo exhibition at the Beaux-Arts in Paris.
