The artist's works and style

Marius Borgeaud is a 19th-century luminist painter (an artist associated with the movement by Georges Peillex), who depicts many interior scenes. The artist worked almost exclusively with oil on canvas. Nourished by Dutch and Flemish painting, he drew inspiration from them in his choice of compositions and use of light.

The life of Marius Borgeaud

Marius Borgeaud (1861 - 1924) was a Swiss luminist painter.

Born into a bourgeois family, he began his career as a bank clerk in Marseille. He then moved to Paris, where he led a debauched lifestyle, forcing him into rehab. Borgeaud then decided to devote himself to painting, in Paris, where he met Félix Vallotton, also Swiss, who allowed him to exhibit his work at the Galerie Duret. He studied with Ferdinand Cormon and Fernand Humbert, and befriended Picabia. All these artists exerted a certain influence on his work.

He then discovered Brittany, and in particular the Pont-Aven group, a region he chose to live in for half the year, as it provided him with the opportunity to find his inspiration. It was there that he produced his series of interiors, which would earn him success at the Salon des Indépendants.

Dividing his time between various towns in Brittany and Paris, where he exhibited and sold his paintings, the artist continued to produce until his death in Montmartre at the age of 62.
