Franz Xavier Bergmann, his life and work

Franz Xavier Bergmann (1861-1936), an Austrian foundryman, became an important figure in 19th-century sculpture.

Born in Vienna, in the Austrian Empire, he inherited his father's foundry, opened a year before his birth. Franz Xavier was able to expand it, first producing bronzes using models designed by his father.

Gradually, he took on board new trends, renewing his team of sculptors to create pieces in the Art Nouveau movement.

He then developed the technique of cold painting, also known as dust painting.

The foundry's activity was interrupted during the Great Depression, and Franz Xavier's son reopened it for some time afterwards.

Franz Xavier Bergmann's imprint on his period

Some of Bergmann's works can be seen in various European cities, but relatively few: most of his work is in private collections. His legacy to the history of 19th-century art and sculpture is considerable.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Not all Bergmann's works are signed; if they are, it's with a "B" above an urn-shaped inscription. That's why, if you think you own a work by or by Bergmann, it's essential to have it appraised and authenticated by an expert.
