Characteristics of Petrus wine

Petrus is a very special wine, which is why it's so highly prized. It's a red wine, fruity with certain floral notes. Its density is recognized as one of the best in the world.

The vineyard is located in Pomerol, in the Bordeaux region, west of Saint Emilion. The vineyard's soils have a very high concentration of iron, which gives the wine its distinctive taste, thanks to the gravel and blue clay that naturally hydrate the soil.

The history of the Petrus vineyard

The vineyard initially belonged to the Arnaud family. Marie-Louise Loubat bought part of it in 1925 and took charge of production. In 1945, she acquired the part of the vineyard that did not belong to her. Jean-Pierre Moueix joined her in 1947. A wine merchant, he helped her to make the vineyard known internationally.

Marie-Louise Loubat succeeds in presenting her wine at the wedding banquet of Queen Elizabeth II. For his part, Moueix introduces it to the Kennedy family, who praise the merits of Petrus.

The estate now belongs to the Moueix descendants.

Since 2010, the grape varieties are 100% Merlot.

The origin of the name comes from the locality, long since named Saint Pierre. Literally translated as Petrus in Latin, the bottle labels pay homage to Saint Peter by representing the keys to Paradise, held by the saint.

The success of Petrus wine

Petrus wine enjoyed great success during the 20th century, and is still highly prized by wine collectors and connoisseurs today. Renowned wine critic Robert Parker has awarded nine exceptional vintages a score of 100/100.
