Reasons to sell an Art Nouveau watch

If you own an Art Nouveau watch and don't know how to sell it, auctions are the answer. Indeed, collectors use this medium to find models that jewelry houses no longer offer for sale or that are very rare in boutiques. Prices can reach unprecedented heights, even higher than those offered by jewelry houses when they sell new watches.

Art Nouveau style and techniques

Art Nouveau watches stand out for their use of precious materials, combined with inspiration from natural motifs and curved, sinuous lines. The shades of color are quite vivid, to bring out the different enamels often used in the making of these objects. Private commissions were often placed with designers such as Longines or René Lalique, resulting in totally unique creations.

History of the Art Nouveau watch

The Art Nouveau movement emerged at the end of the 19th century and was popularized by the 1900 World's Fair. The movement was a reaction to the clichés of the turn of the century, with more stylized decors and more engraving. The great jewellers, many of whom emerged at the beginning of the 20th century, jumped at the chance to breathe new life into haute-horlogerie. This was particularly true of Cartier, Patek Philippe and Vacheron Constantin. These houses advocated a new design that seduced and introduced a new clientele to high-end watchmaking.

Jewelry from this period was ousted by the emergence of the Art Deco movement, which was more simplified and angular.
