Designer Marco Zanuso

Marco Zanuso (1916-2001) was an Italian designer born in Milan.

He studied at the Ecole Polytechnique in his hometown, and opened his own design studio in 1945.

Close to Gio Ponti, he wrote articles in his magazine theorizing Modern Design. He became the magazine's editor. Deeply involved in the architectural press, he later became editor of the monthly magazine Casabella.

From 1957, he worked in collaboration with Richard Sapper. The first commercially available plastic chair was born of this partnership.

On a personal level, he creates sleek designer furniture, especially armchairs.

The different Zanuso chair models

Zanuso designs and markets a range of different armchairs for different uses and aesthetics: it doesn't necessarily use the same materials. Each model has undergone slight evolution over time. So it's impossible to talk about the different variations of Zanuso armchairs without mentioning this diversity through the ages.

Marco Zanuso, Lady armchair

The Lady armchair is one of Marco Zanuso's most famous creations. Designed in 1949, it is distinguished by its rounded forms and exceptional comfort. It won an award at the Milan Triennale in 1951 for its innovative design. The armchair is often made in fabric or leather, with a metal frame and brass legs.

This chair is an evolution of the Lady chair, with more generous proportions and a more imposing design. The Senior chair retains the soft curves and comfort of the Lady model, while adding a touch of sophistication and elegance.

The Martingala armchair, designed in 1952, is another example of Zanuso's talent for creating comfortable, elegant seating. This model is characterized by a stricter, rectangular silhouette, while retaining a soft, welcoming seat.

This armchair, designed for publisher Arflex, is known for its tilting backrest and clean lines. It exemplifies Zanuso's modern, functional style, combining comfort with minimalist aesthetics.

The Regent armchair is another iconic model from the 1960s. It is more voluminous than its predecessors, with a high back and wide armrests for optimum comfort.

These armchairs are not only examples of Marco Zanuso's creative genius, they are also masterpieces of modern Italian design. Zanuso's creations continue to be sought after by collectors and design enthusiasts worldwide.
