Thuong Lan's style and technique

Thuong Lan has mastered several painting techniques, including silk painting, which is not very widespread in France. This typically Asian technique arrived in Vietnam thanks to the creation of the Indochina School of Fine Arts.

Thuong Lan Nguyen, a little-known 20th-century designer

Thuong Lan Nguyen (1906-1947), a Vietnamese artist, is successful on the auction market.

He works with many different techniques, depicting landscapes, sometimes spiritual temples and figures.

He produced woodcuts, very few oil paintings (not the best results at auction), ink-on-paper and watercolor drawings, as well as ink on silk. The technique originated in Japan and China, but developed in Vietnam in the early 20th century with the founding of the Indochina School of Fine Arts. It was in Vietnam that the silk washing technique was invented, enabling gradations to be obtained by superimposing several layers of ink.

His subjects and his way of painting remain the same, whatever the technique he uses.

Thuong Lan's imprint on his period

Thuong Lan remains a painter largely unknown to the general public, even though his works are highly prized at auction by Vietnamese buyers. Very little is known about his life.

Recognizing the artist's signature

Thuong Lang's works are not all signed. He sometimes leaves a signature, but this may have faded over time. This is why the estimate is so high.
