History and development of the pommel gun

The first pommel guns appeared under the Ancien Régime and were developed by the various French gunmakers.

Its design evolved from that of infantry and naval pistols, but it was specially designed for horsemen, hence its name - as the pistol is placed in the saddle tree on the horse's saddle.

According to some sources, this type of pistol already existed at the Battle of Marignano (1515), where the Seigneur de Corbion used it after creating it.

It's a handgun, and therefore quite small in length.

The success of collectors' pommel guns

Pommel guns are very popular at auction, as they are a sought-after collector's item. Production was very high, as this weapon was used for a long time and equipped many armies.

The more famous and esteemed the model, the higher the value of the weapon. This was the case with Tolstoy's pistols and Napoleon I's le Page pistols.
