History and background of city swords

The city sword is a weapon that developed in Italy at the end of the Renaissance. Rapier swords were created for the first time in Spain in the 16th century, and are characterized by a long, thin blade designed for thrusting. Their hilt was not very elaborate at first, but quickly became so thanks to Bologna's masters of arms, who appropriated these weapons for fencing. It was in this region that the ricasso was developed, a space between the blade and the hilt that allows a better grip on the weapon. It protects the index finger and improves balance. Caravaggio was famous for wearing them, and fighting with them.

Later, this weapon was adapted and revised, with the development of court and ceremonial weapons. The crab sword, often found at auction, was born in the 17th century. There is no longer a ricasso, and the iron frame is made up of four small claws turned inwards towards the bottom of the guard.

The military function of these weapons was abandoned in 1650, although they continued to be produced not only in Italy, but also in the Netherlands, Germany, Spain and France. The style of the guards varied from country to country(bell-shapedtaza for Spain; curves and chasing developed on Italian rapiers and pappenheim for German swords).

City swords are firmly anchored in the collective imagination, thanks to various films and novels, including Alexandre Dumas' The Three Musketeers.
