It was following a personal family tragedy that Jean Delourme became aware of the seriousness of the handicap caused by a quadriplegia following an accident. He then noticed that in France, at that time, these paralyses were seen as a fatality against which nothing could be done. He decided to reject this state of affairs and surrounded himself with eminent researchers to create the IRME: an association to finance fundamental research on traumatic spinal cord injuries.
