Artist's style and technique
A landscape painter, Gustave Cariot mainly depicted rural areas or urban views of Brittany. He took the technique of Impressionism to a new level of sophistication, based on science. Like Seurat, he embraced divisionism: colors were no longer mixed on the palette, but applied purely to the canvas. The blending of these colors takes place in the viewer's eye. The hues are particularly gleaming, giving off a resolutely vivid luminosity, whatever the season.
The life of Gustave Cariot
Gustave Cariot (1872 - 1950) developed a passion for art from an early age, particularly drawing. He had no academic training, but managed to make a name for himself by practicing alone, as a self-taught artist, and devoted himself to depicting rural and urban landscapes. Thanks to his talent and determination, he began his career by exhibiting in a number of Parisian galleries, and was even admitted to the Société des Artistes Indépendants. It wasn't until 1903 that he really made his mark, leaving a lasting imprint on the history of art and on his generation. During his lifetime, he became widely recognized by critics and the French public, and even after the First World War, his reputation and appreciation of his work continued to grow. From then on, he took part in some very prestigious exhibitions. Nevertheless, Gustave Cariot's name faded from memory over time, and exhibitions devoted to him are extremely rare.
Recognizing the artist's signature
Gustave Cariot signs most of his works with his name "G Cariot" at bottom right, in cursive script.
