Artist's style and technique

Claudius Linossier's aesthetic establishes him as one of the key artists of the French Art Deco movement. Among the many pieces he created, vases occupy a prominent place, perfectly illustrating the geometric simplification characteristic of this movement. Linossier's motifs are inspired by Greek art.

As a coppersmith, Claudius Linossier practices a traditional craft that enables him to create unique metal pieces without the need for soldering. Linossier distinguishes himself by his ability to select different varieties of copper for each of his creations, making each piece unique, adorned with both archaic and geometric decoration, embellished with metallic inlays.

The life of Claudius Linossier

Born into a family of weavers, Claudius Linossier (1893-1953) took courses in silversmithing and was apprenticed to a locksmith after obtaining his school-leaving certificate.

A few months later, he joined a religious goldsmith's workshop. Claudius Linossier's training enabled him to acquire complete expertise in metalworking and inlaying.

Fascinated by this ability to "paint with fire", Claudius Linossier soon travelled to the French capital, then in the throes of the interwar period, to hone his skills. In Paris, the artist met many people and spent his days in front of the Greek collections of the Louvre museum.

Claudius Linossier was very attached to his native Lyon, and decided to open his workshop there. There, he created his first pieces inspired by Greek vases and figures. Quickly exhibited, his works were much appreciated by art lovers and local critics alike. Linossier's success reached as far as Paris, where he was exhibited and sold on the Rue Royale and at the Salon d'Automne.
